Hamley, Major-General Francis Gilbert, eldest son of the late Joseph Hamley, was born in 1815, and entered the army as ensign 12th Foot in 1835. He was senior officer in command of the Imperial troops in the colony of South Australia on the death of Governor Sir Dominic Daly, on Feb. 19th, 1868. The next day he was sworn in as Administrator of the Government of the Colony, and remained Chief of the Executive till the arrival of Sir James Fergusson on Feb. 15th, 1869. He was then only lieut.-colonel. General Hamley died in London on Jan. 12th, 1876, at the age of fifty-six.
